HagerSmith partnered with longtime client Aspire Property Group to renovate and design an expansive open-concept cocktail lounge with multiple seating options, a side room dedicated to taste-testing and private events, and enough space for bands to set up live music sessions in the back.
HagerSmith Interior Designers complemented the historic building’s exposed brick walls and poured concrete floors with cozy sitting areas and plush fabrics in primary colors. Authentic whisky and bourbon barrels tie the cocktail bar to the original Weldon Mills Distillery, where the brand’s spirits are processed, purified and bottled.
A living wall incorporates a pop of greenery into the subterranean space, and solid oak tables pay homage to the wooden aging barrels used to distill Weldon Mills’ products. Behind the bar, a custom-designed backlit street map of historic Downtown Durham centers patrons in the heart of the city. The glass walls of the tasting room feature loose North Carolina corn, malted wheat and malted barley, the three main ingredients in Weldon Mills’ many spirits.
