Designed for a long-time client, this two-bedroom apartment commands a sweeping view of Downtown Durham and features a west-facing rooftop viewing patio primed for entertaining guests while the sun sets.
Downtown Durham Apartment
Located at the top of a commercial mixed-use building along the Downtown’s main street, the penthouse apartment was designed as a new addition to an existing brick building without compromising the original structure’s style or historic building status.
Accessible via private elevator lobby, the apartment prioritizes skyline views and high, airy ceilings while simultaneously grounding the interior with cool-toned furniture, dark wood cabinetry and accents, and Midcentury Modern-style light fixtures. Folding glass doors allow free-flowing access onto the rooftop patio from the kitchen and living room, creating a unified space perfect for outdoor parties. Adjacent to the kitchen, a smaller lounge serves as the apartment’s entertainment center and home office.
The Master bath is equipped with a Lutron-controlled backlit mirror that can be adjusted to different temperatures to suit the time of day and season. Floor to ceiling stonework and gold accents enhance the uniformity and cleanliness of the countertop lines and grey cabinetry. The guest bathroom adopts the same forest green color palette used in the living room and features a backlit mirror with light temperature adjustments.
This project was a departure from our usual commercial designs, but one we thoroughly enjoyed seeing through from start to finish. Thanks again to our client for trusting us to create a unique space that brings the best of downtown living to life!
